It was sometime in late October last year that my cellphone beeped one lazy Sunday morning when I was still in bed. It was a message from a fellow bird photographer, who said "Ruddy Kingfisher has been spotted at the xxxxxxx Gardens. Come quick if you want to get it!!"
Without further ado I sprang out of bed, grabbed a quick bite and my camera gear, flagged a cab down to the park, about 7 or 8 km away from my home. It was there that I had a close personal encounter with the breathtakingly beautiful Ruddy Kingfisher (Halcyon coromanda), a rare passage migrant to my country. Fortunately it hung around long enough for me to capture its beautiful ruddy orange-red plumage with a slight hint of purplish sheen. One of the most gorgeous kingfishers I have photographed so far!
